The Challenge

When we met in early summer over iced Lattes to discuss digital marketing tactics, Southern roastery and restaurant Krankies Coffee was set to relaunch their core product lineup: 6 varieties of small-batch, hand-roasted specialty coffee.

The only problem? The look of their website—a black-and-purple aughts throwback running on WooCommerce—had little in common with their bright, approachable new packaging.

This meant that co-owner Dan Pennock was facing the unsavory reality that he was about to use precious cash flow to pay their ‘webmaster’ a pretty penny just to set up these new products on the old site; a seemingly straightforward task that was costly and would likely result in an odd mashup of the old branding and the new.

With a 20-year reputation as a local favorite and a steady revenue stream from their daily breakfast & lunch service, a disjointed web presence wouldn’t be the end of the world. But Dan and his co-founders had their sights set on bigger-picture goals; they wanted a fresh identity that could reach beyond the confines of their regional history and help user then into a new phase of business development.

Krankies was ready for a refresh.

Our Approach

While Krankies’ visual brand identity was at the forefront of our initial discussions, Alcove Studio’s site analysis yielded numerous functionality and user experience issues that we were excited to address.

One of those was for Dan and his team; we knew that getting them up and running on Shopify would be hugely beneficial. No longer beholden to an off-site freelance designer acting as a gatekeeper to even the most minor of edits, Krankies would now be free to make updates to product listings, navigation, copywriting and imagery whenever they saw fit.

The old site had fallen into a bit of disrepair; dead end links, buried product availability info, and broken customer journey checkpoints proliferated. Our redesign leverages strong visual storytelling, simple language, and smart navigation structure to deliver a shopping experience that not only looks great but is highly functional—aesthetics that actually convert.

We opted for photography with just a touch of edge; bright and tidy images with lots of texture and warmth. To pique user engagement we created photo animations and featured just the right amount of additional movement with interactive, scrolling elements like product marquees and secondary navigation.

We also curated a selection of high quality stock images to compliment the bespoke shots we captured on-site, including thoughtfully researched imagery representing bean origin and production techniques—details not touched on in the prior site but which are some of the core differentiators the brand boasts.

We coded a custom visual indicator of roast-level (from Light to Dark Roasts and everything in between) for coffee product detail pages that’s dynamically populated using metafields. We featured infographic product images into the PDP photo carousel for quick browsing and sizing clarity. We prioritized important copywriting and hid supporting info within interactive easy-tap icons.

We recommended and implemented two main app integrations for Krankies: a subscriptions app to promote recurring revenue and migrate existing recurring coffee orders, and a cart upsell app to increase AOV and boost subscribers. Lastly, in a truly artful workaround, we soft-hacked a Shopify transactional email format in order to manually notify coffee subscribers of the site relaunch.

The Results

“The site feels more polished and professional, and I feel more confident directing customers to it. Managing updates on the backend is also easier.”

- Dan Pennock, Krankies Co-Owner

“The new site makes it easier for me to manage coffee inventory on the fly. This may be the first time we've had both packaging and a website that we were pleased with AND had anything like a unified aesthetic at the same time!“

- Ian Dennis, Krankies Roasting & Order Fulfillment

Allie was efficient and knowledgeable. The tutorials she created for managing the site were very helpful
