Metafields are one of Shopify's most powerful (and underused) features, especially for brands with complex or craft-focused products that need more than a generic description to sell well.
By default, Shopify gives you a handful of fields for each product: title, description, price, images, SKU, weight. But what if you also need to communicate:
- Materials and care instructions
- Dimensions or capacity
- Origin story or artisan details
- Allergen info or certifications
- Fit guide or sizing notes
That's where metafields come in. You create custom fields in your Shopify admin, fill them in for each product, and then use Liquid code (or a page builder) to display them on your product pages — usually in a structured, repeatable way that looks clean and professional.
At Alcove Studio, we use metafields constantly to build dynamic, data-rich product pages. Instead of cramming everything into one long description, we break information into smart, scannable sections. This improves readability, makes updates easier, and gives you way more control over layout and hierarchy.
Examples / tips:
- Use metafields for any product info that repeats across multiple products (materials, dimensions, care instructions) — this keeps your data consistent and your updates efficient.
- Pair metafields with dynamic sections so your product pages look polished without manual formatting.
- Common metafield uses: ingredient lists, size charts, "made in [location]," sustainability details, warranty info.
- You don't need to code to use metafields anymore — Shopify's admin now has a user-friendly interface for creating and managing them.
