Shopify's way of creating custom content types (like "recipes," "artists," "ingredients," or "certifications") that can be referenced across products, collections, or pages.

If metafields are custom fields, metaobjects are custom things — reusable content modules you can connect to your products.

Metaobjects take metafields to the next level. Instead of just adding extra info to a product, you're creating standalone content entries that can be reused and linked across your whole store.

Here's an example: let's say you sell skincare and want to feature key ingredients on your product pages. You could:

  • Old way (metafield): Manually type "Hyaluronic Acid — hydrates and plumps skin" into every product that contains it. If you update the description, you have to update it everywhere.
  • New way (metaobject): Create a "Key Ingredients" metaobject. Add one entry for Hyaluronic Acid with a name, description, and benefits. Then link that ingredient to any product that uses it. Update the description once, and it updates everywhere.

This is incredibly useful for:

  • Food/beverage brands — recipes, flavor profiles, sourcing details
  • Artisan/craft brands — artist bios, material origins, production methods
  • Wellness brands — ingredient glossaries, certifications, clinical studies
  • Any brand with complex storytelling — connecting products to people, places, or processes

Metaobjects make your site more maintainable, more consistent, and more scalable. They also make your product pages feel richer and more authoritative without you having to copy-paste the same info 47 times.

Examples / tips:

  • Use metaobjects when the same piece of content (an artist, an ingredient, a certification) appears across multiple products.
  • Pair metaobjects with dynamic sections to auto-generate beautifully formatted content blocks on PDPs.
  • Great for "Meet the Maker" sections, sustainability credentials, or curated storytelling that connects products to bigger narratives.
